Keeping ChirpStack on Your Own Servers Without Running It Yourself

When "just use a hosted platform" isn't an option

For many organisations, moving ChirpStack to a shared hosted platform is the simplest answer. But it isn't always allowed:

  • Data residency rules require LoRaWAN data to stay in a specific country, cloud account or data centre
  • Customer contracts — common with utilities, local government and healthcare — specify where data lives and who can access it
  • Security policy requires systems to run inside your own network, behind your own controls
  • Existing investment in servers, cloud commitments or private networks makes moving elsewhere hard to justify

In these cases ChirpStack stays on your infrastructure. The question becomes: who keeps it running?

What running ChirpStack in-house really involves

Installing ChirpStack is the easy part. Owning it in production is a continuous job:

Patching and upgrades

ChirpStack, PostgreSQL, Redis, the MQTT broker, Gateway Bridge and the operating system all need regular updates. Each one needs testing before it reaches production, and occasionally a major upgrade — like a v3 to v4 migration — turns into a project of its own.

Backups and recovery

Automated backups of the database and Redis, stored off the server, with regular restore tests. Without the restore tests, you don't really know whether you can recover.

Monitoring and alerting

Knowing the server is up isn't enough. Someone has to watch gateway connectivity, uplink volumes, integration errors and resource usage — and respond when the alerts fire.

On-call cover

LoRaWAN networks don't keep office hours. If thousands of devices depend on your network server, someone needs to be able to respond at night, at weekends and during holidays.

Capacity and security

Device fleets grow, integrations get added and threats change. Regular reviews of capacity, access, keys and exposure keep small issues from becoming incidents. Our 12-question ChirpStack health check shows what to look for.

The hidden cost: the one person who knows it

In most organisations we speak to, ChirpStack is looked after by one engineer — often the person who set it up, alongside a full-time role doing something else.

That works until they are on holiday, busy with a deadline, or leave the company. Then upgrades stop, alerts go unanswered and knowledge disappears. The real cost of in-house operation isn't the server bill. It is the risk sitting on one person's shoulders, and the hours they spend away from the work they were hired for.

How managed operations on your infrastructure works

Managed operations gives you the outcome of a hosted platform while ChirpStack stays where it is:

  • You keep the infrastructure and the data. ChirpStack runs in your cloud account or data centre. Your data never leaves your infrastructure.
  • Access on your terms. Typically through a VPN or bastion host with dedicated, least-privilege accounts that you can revoke at any time.
  • We do the operational work. Monitoring, patching, backups, upgrades and capacity planning, with documented changes and agreed maintenance windows.
  • Clear accountability. Agreed response times, 24/7 incident response and an uptime SLA — rather than a best-effort arrangement with whoever happens to be available.
